Song Notes – Barstool Preacher
By Ben Naught
“Barstool Preacher” was inspired by a real moment in a small town bar in Salkum, Washington. One night, I stopped into a place called The Brownshack Tavern, and like a lot of little taverns across the country, it had its regulars and its stories.
That night, I got to talking with an old boy sitting at the bar who had clearly lived a full life. The kind of guy who might not look like much of a preacher at first glance, but once he starts talking, you realize he’s got a whole lot of hard-earned wisdom.
He wasn’t preaching from a pulpit. He was preaching from a barstool.
The more we talked, the more I realized how many life lessons can come from the most unexpected places. Sometimes, truth doesn’t come dressed up in a suit and tie. Sometimes, it comes from someone who’s made mistakes, learned the hard way, and isn’t afraid to tell you about it.
The cover image for this song was taken inside The Brownshack Tavern, where metal footprints are bolted into the floor, marking the spot at the bar. That’s where the idea for “Barstool Preacher” was born.
Sometimes the best sermons aren’t heard in church… they’re heard across a bar.
